With electricity prices and a comment from Eric made me think - can this be reduced? I currently have a 45 minute boil.
Hot break is 8-10 mins in.
Bittering @ 15 mins (after snot break)
#2 hopping & Irish moss at 30 mins
Done at 45 mins.
Immediately I could do 30mins.

#2 hopping & Irish moss at 20 mins (just enough for the Irish moss)
Done at 30 mins.
Any ideas?

If your boiler is insulated then maintaining the boil doesn't actually use that much electricity, assuming you can dial the power down. I generally run at a simmer for the first 45 minutes then up the power for the last 15 minutes just to boil any nasties off.

I agree there. I add extra layers for fermentation. I have considered another thicker layer of washable heatproof insulation to stay on permanently. But I cannot find a suitable material.

I also think that the "saving" isn't that big. I did some math and I came to about £2. So tinkering about with boil length really is pennies. Certainly much less that most ingredients!

Current UK price for 1kw hour is 31.4 pence. So a typical 3kw element running at full bore costs 94.2 pence per hour.

Absolutely. Not huge savings to be had.

Re: How short is your boil?
I've done a 30 minute boil for a NEIPA that turned out great. That was more about personal time saving than for any other reason.
I don't do it regularly though.

Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

I don't see the need to spend longer necessary on any part of the process. The saving is good but I have a heater running all night
