AG#3 - 07/11/07 - Fiddlers Elbow

Post by Buzz » Tue Nov 06, 2007 3:30 pm

The London Pride went so well a couple of weeks ago I feel confident enough to tackle AG #3. My current fav bottled beer is Fiddlers Elbow so I'm going to have a crack at something similar on my day off tomorrow;

3355gm pale malt
840gm wheat malt

Mash: 90min @ 65deg

Boil: 120min

80g styrian goldings 120 mins
16g styrian goldings 15 mins
whirlifloc 10 mins

yeast: either S-04 or MPG, not sure yet - feel free to advise.

S04 works very well in Styrian Stunner so it should be god for this as the wheat is the only difference 8)

Good luck and enjoy :wink:

Water on at 10.00am and grains in at 10.30 - using the hole in the carrier bag method;

Mash temp just about spot on;

Just getting ready for the first runnings off the mash now. More pictures to follow once I'm all done. Oh, and I'm reducing the boil time to 90 mins.

13.40 sparging finished - running off the wort...

Boiling outside; my effort at insulation is an old single duvet tied around the boiler...

Just waiting to add the first lot of hops now

Hops in for 90mins

Used Whirfloc for the first time but not initially impressed as wort seemed clearer on my last brew with Irish Moss :(

Also lost a lot of volume to evaporation. Only collected about 17l @ 1044. I might collect a bit more from the sparge next time and add to the boil to make up for some of the loss. Then again, I might have boiled too hard as I really wanted those Styrian Goldings to come through.

Yeast pitched at 17.40 and now clearing up.
