Thought I'd give this a go from the newsletter as it sounds rather nice.

25 litres
OG1055
Eff 70%
86 EBC 52 IBU
estimated 5.6% ABV

Pale Malt 5.08kg
Roasted Barley 470g
Black Treacle 260g (upped to 300g)
Wheat Malt 240g
Chocolate Malt 160g

Mash 68C for 60 mins

Northdown 60g 60mins

Boil 60mins

Yeast 2x S-04

Image Image
Doughing in, much easier to stir in a round tun, and Spinny sparger comes back out of retirement

Image Image
Emptying the spent grains, and the unhopped wort just coming to the boil

Image Image
Hops on the block for the chop, and on the scales, spot on

Image Image
Treacle time, mmm sticky.....then mixing with hot wort to get it dissolved so as not to damage the elements

Image
Cornies make an attractive and useful stand for the chiller as I'm using a new 10gal fv which is higher so I don't get the 'ole pavlova effect all over the kitchen

Image
First runnings in to the new fv, it looks lost in there

All in all a thoroughly good brewday, maybe it's because I've not brewed for a while.

hell, that's what I forgot to say, thanks for reminding me Vos,

the wort smelt great, proper treacley and sweet, just hope it smells the same coming out of the bottle

well, I thought I'd give the spinny another chance, I got poor efficiency when I used it with the coolbox mash tun and I was getting a bit put off

I put it down to channelling down the sides or something, but batch sparging restored my faith and convinced I wasn't doing anything wrong anywhere else.

I probably batch sparge the next brew, to see if it makes any difference again

according to Promash I got 79% mash eff. so that is a drastic improvement.

Cheers Tom and SS

AT, out of all the stouts I've done this smelt the best while boiling, give it a go

Yeast head formed within 3 hours, skimmed the crap off last night and this morning.

Lovely pictures Garth, great work 8)

I've been thinking about doing a stout for a while & I'll probably have a go at this one in the New Year. I'll be interested to find out how yours turns out.

How did it smell Baz?

RTD, just bottled this from cornie and the treacle smell was there as much as before, I bottled 20 and kept 15 litres in the cornie for 'further research'
