Bath Gem 1041

3800g Crushed Marris Otter
250g Crushed Amber Malt
250g Crushed Wheat Malt
50g Crushed Chocolate Malt

Mash 90 mins at 67c

Boil for 75 mins only

Goldings 70g Full 75mins
Northern Brewer 15g Full 75 mins
Goldings 10g Power off
Irish Moss

Ferment at 17c using brewerys yeast

This is one of my favourite brews and all the ingredients are there as in the real brew but obviously I am guessing at proportions. The only addition is the northern brewer cos its great and I have some handy.

Bigster smurfs brewery is on red alert and I hopefully will be welcomed home at 5pm to a 74c pot of water to kick off the mash - aim to be all done and dusted by 10pm.
Camera charged just in case there are any incidents  otherwise probably wont post any as you are more than familiar with my set up.

Slightly nervous as I wean myself off DL BBLTYB

I'd never heard of this beer, so I looked it up in the good beer guide:

'Well-balanced and complex, this medium bodied bitter is malty, fruity and hoppy throughout. Amber coloured, it is drier and more bitter at the end'.

Sounds great :beer

Interested to hear how it goes :)

Well mash under way and should be sparging around 6:30.

Already had an incident  - when pre heating the mash tun the hose over the manifold copper Tee (secured by a SS hose clip ) just fell apart. Tightened it now - fingers crossed it survives the mash. :o

Boil should be finished by 9pm - all very smooth so far. Even time to watch coronation st

Think I may have overdone the chocolate malt though - it may be psychological but my garage smells like willy wonkas.

One question on the hot break - previous brews have resulted in a hot break when approaching 90c then a quick stir and its gone. This one carried on well in to the boil and stirring made little difference. Any ideas?

cheers daab re protein levels. Hope your visit went ok today and they didnt stick things where they didnt ought to?

All done and dusted and enjoying a courage directors

Finished 1042 almost spot on for what I was aiming for 1041 . Will try and work out efficiency for interests sake.

Everything went well - I think I have cracked it  . The only incident was dropping big bertha when getting her down from her perch. As you can see quite a drop.
Image

Dusted her down and thought looks ok - only when I tried to put her in the boiling wort did I notice she was all twisted and running repairs needed. Must treat my women better :D

Just added a bit of the wort to the brewerys yeast and chucked straight in.

Planning next brew already

Looking good this morning - brewers yeast has kicked off nicely. Was about 25c when pitched last night - very cold out there in smurf land this morning though.
