Good Lager/Pils recipe?

Post by PEACOCKSUIT » Mon Sep 06, 2010 11:26 am

Just got a fridge to have a bash at Lagering 8) .

It will be my first non 'kit' brew. Can anyone recommend a good recipe for a Czech Pils or German style lager beer? Would there be any speciality grains to steep with a Pils made using LME/DME?
I want this to produce a noticeable worth while result if I to go to the effort of Lagering it. As good as the premium 'kits' have been so far I want cold draught lager at home 8) . I have 3 corny kegs so hopefully my Lagering fridge can double up as a kegerator  .

Cheers.

I've just done a "Design-a-brew" german style larger from hamstead home brew and i'm just about to put it into a secondary FV to clear ready for my fridged cornie :D

It is a 2 can hopped LME but you boil the speciality grains and aroma hops seperatly in little teabags and add it to the wort.

German style larger:
2x No 2 base LME
1x Cara malt
1x Torrified wheat
1x Hallertau

First indications from the gravity samples are that its gonna be a good one :)

HighHops Lager

Steep 200g light crystal in 2L water @ 65C for 1/2 hour
Add 2.75Kg light spraymalt & 40g Saaz. Boil for 60 mins.
Add 8g Saaz. Boil for 20 mins.
Add 7g Saaz. Boil for 10 mins. Flame off.
Top up to 23L
4.3% ABV
17 EBU
Use Saflager yeast (or Wyeast 2278) and ferment at less than 13C.

When the ferment has finished (2-3 weeks), lager for 1 month. Start @ 7C and slowly reduce to 1C over 2 weeks. Bring up to 15C for 3 days before bottling to make sure fermentation is complete. Prime with 100g dextrose and leave at room temp for 2 weeks.
