Hi,
I am planning on doing the Hop Back Brewery Entire Stout clone from this website:
http://www.hopandgrain.com/default.aspx ... 2489563260
The main malt is MARIS OTTER PALE MALT but as I am doing an extract brew I wont be mashing anything.
How much DME do I use to replace 3640 gms of Maris otter pale malt?
How much DME for Hop back stout?
Re: How much DME for Hop back stout?

Beer engine says 2.3-2.4KG, it shows 2.5KG as 1.018, but you're there or thereabouts.

Thanks for the feedback. I have one other question regarding this brew and I am kind of new to extract brewing was wondering if you could help. I am going to steep the grains before the brew but I also want to steep some oats ("instant oats" actually) too. I understand that steeping the oats will not impart any flavor or sugars into the brew because they have to be mashed with Barley enzymes but I was hoping to get a thicker feel to my stoutEoinMag wrote:potatoes wrote:THink I can answer my own post. Will steeping oats help get a thicker feel to my stout or is it just a waste of time

Cheers,

Hmmm I think you'd really have to mash the oats rather than steep them. You'll end up with a milky run off from them and that won't ferment out and you'll be left with a very hazy brew, now this is ok in a stout normally but it might end up milky. I'd say you should look into a mini mash if you want to go with oats.
Someone else might correct me on the haze issue, but I think the mouthfeel might also be strange if the brew is chocca with oat starches.
Have a look into the whole idea of stovetop brewing for how to do a mini mash, or even consider using a bag to do a brew in a bag style mini mash, that's how I started with all-grain by doing mini mashes for my extract brews in muslin, then moved onto full all grain with BIAB.

Thanks for feedback and idea. I will look into how to do partial mash on the www.howtobrew.com website. I dont have much room at my apartment so I will look into how to scale it down. Cheers,
