Hi I'm only doing extract brews, would like to know how you calculate the brewing efficiency in order to get accurate IBU readings. I have used the online calculators but dont know what info regarding brew efficiency you put in.

Which online calculator are you using?

In extract brewing you don't need to worry about any efficiency because you are using something that eliminates the main efficiency issue you have with full mash. Maybe yeast efficiency but you'd probably only worry about that if you were really getting into the nitty gritty of stuff...

When brewers talk about efficiency they mean how much sugar you can extract from your malt. I assume you already know how to calculate this, it doesn't have a direct impact on hop utilisation (although it does indirectly).

IBU calculators will usually offer you a range of hop utilisation calculators to work with. Tinseth, Garetz, Rager, to name a few. Since you can't measure IBUs at home except with your tongue, you just have to pick one of these formulae and stick by it, and adjust according to taste for futures brews. The formulae are guesses based on experimentation, usually.
