Moving up a step..

Post by Zephiacus » Sat Feb 26, 2011 12:08 am

Helped my dad out back in the day with his ag brews, would love to get into doing all of that myself but thought that i should go up in steps before spending a lot of time and money on ag equitment.., after about 4-5 kit brews which all worked well enough have tried two extract brews from recipes which were good so thought it time to make my own recipe, i'm aiming at a hoppy IPA style using two hops varietys who smelt good in the store and i think will go well together so tell me what you think, any advice would be welcome too!!

1.8kg Muntons light malt liquid malt extract
1.5kg light spraymalt
500g Crystal Malt
300g Flaked Barley

Bittering hops
50g of Green Bullet hops A.A about 13% for 60 mins
Aroma
50g Fuggles hops A.A about 5% for 15 mins
Cleared with Irish moss
Using Wyeast 'irish ale', havent used wyeast before, jsut the dried stuff but the guy at my brewshop was singing its praises so thought i'd give it a go!

That sound good?

Sounds fine to me, though it won't be pale with that much crystal more best bitter

just cracked open a bottle today, best i've done so far body is nice with a bitter hops hit flowing into some tasty fuggles, it's a bit darker than the pale ale it was meant to be, but as a bitter i'd definatly reccomend, but with that much crystal what can i expect.

:D

I've done the same, moving to extract brewing from kit brewing. I have to say, the results are spectacular in comparison.

I am just fermenting an all Citra hop brew as I type, using a base of pale malt extract. I used 3Kg of PME and 100g of Citra, spread out through the boil to impart bitternes, flavour and aroma, with honey to bring the SG to 1050. I used a Safbrew T-58 strain yeast as it is meant to impart a spicy-peppery taste which I think will work well with all the overt citrus notes from the hops.

The smell from the FV at the moment is heavenly and I can't wait to sample it. I've done the same with an all Fuggles brew, but used a medium malt extract. Now, that one has taken my breath away with the delightful flavours, so much so that I will make it again but with no tweaks! I also made a EKG abd Saaz brew with a 50g addition of fresh root ginger and that was a real delight as well. That's another I'll make again without any tweaks.

This is a great hobby, eh? :D

Bottoms up!

Dave.
Currently Drinking: Marris Otter with home roasted porridge oats, shredded wheat, crystal and black malt, EKG hops and Nottingham yeast. Smooth, dark, and rich - put some aside for Xmas.
Currently Drinking: Bohemian Pilsner with porridge oats, shredded wheat and basmati rice, along with Saaz hops, mandarin zest, coriander, cardamon pods and Munich yeast. Silky on the mouth with a wonderful summer taste. Love this brew!

Fantastic! they both sound really tasty, now comes the hardest part, trying to keep your hands off the stuff until its properly matured!

Brew in a Bag, it's a great way for people to get into proper all-grain with the same equipment as you'd use for extract brewing and just the extra addition of a large grain bag for doing your mash in.

There is a section of the forum here devoted to it, have a look.
