What happened to the gravity?

Post by mrrm1st » Fri Apr 01, 2011 7:43 pm

I made my first partial extract last weekend from the Clone Brews book using the Dogfishhead IPA recipe. After steeping the specialy grains, it called for 3.3kg of extra light DME. I followed the recipe to the letter and expected an original gravity of 1.063 per the recipe.

When in the fermenter and I checked the OG for the first time, it came out at 1.046 (at 20C). I topped up to a brew length of 20L rather than 18.9L per the recipe (for temperature reasons), which I would expect to have a bit of an impact, but where the bloody hell did the rest of my gravity go?

Isaac Newton would be turning in his grave.

Dont know what is causing it, but I have experienced the same thing. Basicallly, my OG was about 1.005 below what I expected every time. When I wanted 1.050 I got 1.045. In the end I just chucked in a bit a sugar or learned to live with it.

From a back of the envelope calculation that amount of DME should have ended you up in the 1060s somewhere. Just to check, you did use dry malt extract not the liquid stuff?

Yep - it was dry malt extract.

The only thing I can think of, which I am not sure explains it, is that after the boil I fished the loose hops out with a sieve. It was quite a concentrated liquid at that time and I may have lost some with the hops......

You might have lost volume you won't have thinned the liquid....
