Hi,
I'm planning on doing my first extract brew soon, but I want to keep things as simple as possible given my lack of extract brewing equipment. I have no wort chiller or a brewpot suitable to do a full boil. So I'm planning on doing a partial boil along the lines of the simple recipes in Charlie Papazian's book. I'd like to do a strong, hoppy IPA.
I'd like to do a 10 litre batch, so I'm thinking of using about 1.5kg of light DME and boiling for 45 mins in 3 litres of water, then topping up with cold water to 10 litres.
As for hops, I've decided to use only pellet hops as I want to preserve as much of the wort as possible. I'm slightly restricted in the selection of pellet hops available to me, but Chinook and Cascade are definites. Might dry-hop with some Amarillo/Simcoe flowers.
Can anyone comment on the above and maybe punch a recipe into one of those snazzy brewing applications. I'm unsure of what proportions of hops and specialty grains to use. (I've got some carapils and light crystal available) I'm also interested in compensating for loss of hop utilisation with the partial boil.
Any help would be great.

Based off a simple recipe I brewed when I was doing partial boil extract beers, all the Cascade was leaf @ 5.5AA.
1.5 kg light DME
20g Cascade @ 60 minutes
35g Cascade @ 20 minutes
25g Cascade @ 1 minute

Cheers Rich.
Do you reckon the 60-minute boil is required given the smaller amounts? Could I get away with 45 mins?

I'd probably go for 60 minutes because part of the function of the boil is the extraction and conversion of hop oils, you'd have to recalculate the first addition (which is primarily a bittering addition) if you did a shorter boil.
