Hi.
Firstly I apologies if this is the wrong topic I have posted in. Didn't see one for newbies.
I am new to home brewing with plans to go all extract then all grain in the future once I practiced on pre-made kits enough.
I've done 4 brews already and they have all turned out quite drinkable, each time ironing out what problems I think I may have had. (First lesson was not to use tap water)
This latest batch I think I may have made a bit of a mess of, (Getting too confident). It is a Young's single tin Bitter. Which I used alongside a Geordie Beer enhancer packet. The problem I created is that I added the enhancer to the tin contents in the fermenter, then added the hot water. This unfortunately created a fair amount of lumpy bits, where I presume the enhancer/dextrose first of all got coated with the tin caramel. After trying to crush/stir the lumpy bits I found most of them were too hard to do with the spoon (Obvously when they did crush they had the powder inside), so I had to leave about a hand full of lumpy bits in it.
Anyway, will this ruin the batch? (Not a huge deal if it does, lossage costs would only be about £15)
I pitched the yeast at 23 degrees (Find it a difficult balance to get the 21 degrees)
Thanks in advance for any help.
Scott.
Help for Newbie - Lumpy Sugar/Dextrose
Re: Help for Newbie - Lumpy Sugar/Dextrose
I dont think it would ruin your batch. You might even find that those hard lumps get broken down over time. Kind of like when you leave the dishes to soak over night. Do you bottle or keg your beer? If you bottle, you wouldnt want to end up with one of those lumps in your bottle or else it might create a bottle bomb. My suggestion would be to rack it to a secondary fermenter and leave the lumps behind. Then bottle or keg a couple of days later.

Many thanks Potatoes.
Never thought about the bottle bomb scenario. Thankfully my normal routine is to rack off to a secondry and will now pay close attention to what I'm syphoning. I normally bottle about an hour later, but will take your advice and leave for a couple of days to settle more.
Problem solved.
