Summer Ale hops Substitution

Post by i*windows » Mon Mar 12, 2012 1:17 pm

hello, I live in Munich and sorely miss drinking "real" beer. I am going to attempt to brew a very simple extract recipe from brewuk, which is their summer ale. My problem is that the recipe calls for

50grm East Kent Goldings hops
25grm Progress hops

I can easily get the East Kent Goldings in Germany, but not the Progress hops, could anyone suggest a replacement? could I use Amarillo?
many thanks

I think Fuggles is the closest substitute for Progress (Progress was bred as a Fuggles replacement) but Amarillo might be an interesting choice, much more citrussy than Progress though.

Hello, and welcome to Jims!

You could try something like Pioneer or Fuggles here. Amarillo will give a massively different result, especially for flavour/aroma - they are a US hop with more more citrus/orange than Progress which is very much an English style hop. Not to say it wouldn't be nice - just very different!

thanks for the input, I'll do 10l with Fuggles and 10l with Amarillo and report back!

+1 coatesg. I used challenger with this recipe and it went well.

well I managed to get Fuggles, East Kent Goldings, Amarillo and Styrian Goldings. So will use the Fuggles and East Kent Goldings in the Summer Ale. Hopefully I can get it started this weekend and have it ready for BBQ Season
