remedy for chill haze
remedy for chill haze
Hi all
Can anyonw suggest a remedy for chill haze? I find it most frustrating when i chill my nice clear ale only to suffer from cloudy haze when I go to drink it. Is there anything I can add to the brew?
regards
Mart

Re: remedy for chill haze
What temperature are you chilling your ale to? The optimum temperature for real ale is 10 to 12c, if you chill it to lager drinking temperature you will get a chill haze.
Re: remedy for chill haze
Yes there is, it's called polyclar (plastic finnings put simply).
Mix it up with some boiled water, add to beer and chill it down to promote a chill haze and it should fine out
I hate chill haze too

Polyclar's not something I've used before so I looked it up. Some potentially interesting points on here about the need to chill when using it - it suggests not: http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/i ... opic=51498
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

I mix it in with boiling water using an electronic whisk, stick it straight into the bottling bucket at room temp, leave it for two days and then bottle. Had no problem with clarity after chilling my beers down in the fridge. I use around 15g per 25ltrs.

Re: remedy for chill haze
Intesting points about the no chilling required, i'll give it a go
@ TC2642, Does the Polyclay leave behind any deposits in your BB?
Cheers.

I've used Polyclar twice now and it's not worked either time - beer as hazy as a soft focus hazel nut. I must be doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what. First time I whisked it up with hot water for 10 minutes, lobbed it in chilled beer (5C) and left it for a couple of days. The next time I prepared it the same but cooled it to room temperature first before lobbing it in cold beer (5C) and leaving for 2 days.

Thanks for all the replies. I am not sure whether I am any the wiser! I am chilling mine probably too cold if i am honest. I have a fridge just for beer but the missus keeps putting veg etc in there which means I have to keep cranking the temperature colder. Then she takes veg out and it goes too cold. Bloody women.

Not that I've noticed, but then it may get left behind with the yeast sediment, the amount used is so small as to be negligible. It does leave a chalky deposit behind in the jug I use to mix it with water though.gnutz2 wrote:Intesting points about the no chilling required, i'll give it a go![]()

Maybe use more or put the stuff into your beer when it's at room temp? Worth a shot.Naich wrote:I've used Polyclar twice now and it's not worked either time - beer as hazy as a soft focus hazel nut. Re: remedy for chill haze
I guess if it works for other people then I should be able to get it working with some experimentation. Although now the weather is getting warmer I shouldn't need it for a while because it won't get cold enough to haze up. In theory, at least.
