Planning a TTL Extract

Post by ajclarkson » Sat Apr 28, 2012 11:39 am

I've been wanting to have a go at doing a Landlord clone for a while now, and as I've finally started doing extract I thought now is probably the best time to do so! Just on this forum alone there are so many different opinions on what is a good all grain recipe, and not too much mention of the extract alternative. So I've decided to set out on my quest for the definitive extract TTL recipe, as if it's good I will keep this one on tap constantly.

So here's my plan, input and critique is very much welcomed and appreciated!

Batch Size: 20L

2.58kg Light DME
30g Black Malt
25g East Kent Goldings
50g Styrian Goldings
Safale S-04 or Nottingham (open to suggestions here)

Method:

Steep black malt in 65C water (around 15L) for 30mins

Add DME and bring to boil

At start of boil add 25g EKG and 30g Styrian

15mins left add whirlfloc

10mins left add 20g Styrian

Cool and make up to 20L in FV

Now this is my first extract not following a pre-existing recipe, so I'm not sure whether my idea to boil 15L and top up will definitely work with this amount of extract, so if anyone can help out or point me at some resources that would help, that'd be great.

Thanks,

Adam

Looks okay to me. It's been so long since I've had TTL I really don't remember enough about how it tasted to say how close your recipe would be. But you should end up with a pretty good beer.
I'm just here for the beer.

Thanks for the reply, good to hear that it sounds like a viable recipe either way. I'm just trying to decide whether to crack on and make this, or use the original grain bill (4.250KG Marris Otter, 30g Black Malt) and have a crack at my first maxi-BIAB to do a full size batch in my 19L stockpot

I wouldnt be against just chucking the black malt in the boil. They do it with most guinness clones and with 30g you're not likely to suffer much tannin etc.
