Thinking of moving to Extract Brewing, an Extract Kit?

Post by Norik » Thu Sep 06, 2012 3:42 am

I've been happily brewing again for a while after taking a break, and my kits are turning fairly consistently, and most importantly drinkable.

I’m thinking of trying my hand at Extract brewing, and I’d like my first try to be as straight forward as possible. When I was reading through posts on this forum I saw these Extract Kits mentioned I thought they might be just the thing to start me off.

I imagine once I feel I know what I’m doing I’ll be buying all the bits separately, and making actual choices, but for a first try I don’t think I'd mind just doing what I’m told to see how things work.

Does anyone have an opinion on these kits?

Cheers, TIA

PS~ BTW, my current brews are usually started with a Coopers Australian Lager Kit (or similar), adding 1kg Light DME, using Nottingham Yeast, and batch priming with 200g of sugar before bottling.

Hello

I'm brand spanking new to all this but thought i'd stick my oar in regardless, so feel free to ignore :)

I did my first extract at the weekend. I went down the route of finding a recipe/method i liked the look of (SN Torpedo) and then just got friendly with my local brew shop. I gave them a print out of the recipe and asked them to make it up for me. Don't know if this way is less cost effective or not than buying on-line but at least i can pop in/call them if something goes awry or i dont understand something.

Just a thought.

Whichever way you go, i hope it goes spot on for you!!

I was told them kits could be split into 2-3 batches depending on your pan size whether this is true is another matter

My problem is, that there's no home brew shop anywhere near, so everything I do is mail order.

Once I get the hang of it, I'll likely choosing my recipes myself and buying what I need (and for less £ than the kit), but hopefully this kit would get me going.

I've been weighing up them brewuk kits and I honestly think they'll be great providing the hops are fresh and the highest quality not just leftovers. Plus if your just starting out hops can be a small fortune, everyday run of mill hops are 3.50-4 quid per 100g yes they can be frozen but your only going to use 20-30g and if you don't like the taste of the beer then that's 4 quid you've wasted. So that's my two pences worth good value if your just starting out or wanting full instructions on boiling sechulea etc

I've been eyeballing these kits for a while now and I really fancy doing the Moorehouse Pendle Witches Brew for a Halloween/bonfire party. I've got 1.5kg of light spraymalt in the cupboard and some packets of assorted yeasts. I've worked out to get the rest of the ingredients will cost me about 8 or 9 quid. I will have to work out the method from my book called Brew your own British Real Ale at Home by Graham Wheeler. I think you use about 80% of the hops in the full boil and 20% for the final 15mins. Other than that I don't think there should be to much of a problem. I certainly think it's worth doing one of these as a starting point.

As far as I can see all the kits have a corrasponding recipe on their website.

These kits are great, I'm now on my second: did the Way To Amarillo a month or so ago and then put the Exmoor Gold on earlier this week. Instructions are really clear and ingredients seem high quality, especially the yeast (both kits have gone like rockets). You'll need a decent-sized stock-pot, I use a 15L one off eBay.

I'd recommend them as a step up from the 2 can kits, sure you could probably buy the ingredients a bit cheaper, but on the whole these kits compare favourably with 2-can kit prices. The Way To Amarillo brew was one of the best beers I've made, and far superior to most 2-can kits I've tried, very much like a good pub ale. It was this clear within a week or so and immediately drinkable, I put half in the barrel (all gone!) and have half bottled:

Have purchased a third kit, the Old Peculiar clone, which will be going on next :D

This is the step I've just taken, after doing 3 increasingly drinkable pre-hopped kits. I went for the Wadworth 6X kit from BrewUK. Used a 13.5l 'Buckingham' stock pot from Amazon, a grain bag and a muslin hop bag over and above the equipment I already had. Can't find the instructions on their website as you suggest but they are fairly easy to follow although could be a bit more specific in some areas. Just come on the forum if you need help. Mine's been in the FV for just over a week so can't comment on the outcome, yet!

For the brewuk.co.uk kits, its the 5th coloured box from the left, just under the big "brew" at the top of their website. Its the coloured box marked "Recipes".
