Help for my first extract
Help for my first extract
Guys,
can I ask for some help?
I'm planning my first extract and I had a go at converting an all grain recipe to extract using the beersmith siftware, but being a noob, I'm hoping someone can check it over for me and make sure I haven't messed up.
Does this look right?

Re: Help for my first extract
Hi,
Couple of things.
1) Your quantities seem quite high. Is it a particularly large batch? Larger than the standard 5 UK gallons (23 litres) homebrew batch?
2) There isn't any malt extract in your converted recipe.
3) The recipe mentions Wheat Malt, you'll need to acquire Wheat Malt Extract as well as "normal" malt extract. Straight wheat malt won't work in an extract recipe - it needs to be mashed.

Re: Help for my first extract
thanks, I did wonder that there was no malt extract but thought it was just me being a noob.
I did wonder about the amount of things, I suspect that's a mistake with the conversions.
I shall have another go.
thanks again

Re: Help for my first extract
How about this:
- Light DME - 2.3kg
Wheat DME - 250g
Medium Crystal - 300g
Roast Barley - 50g
Golding 4.5% - 40g - 60 Mins
Golding 4.5% - 15g - 20 Mins
Fuggle 4.4% - 15g - 20 Mins
Golding 4.5% - 15g - 5 Mins
Fuggle 4.4% - 15g - 5 Mins

Re: Help for my first extract
Hey stitch, thanks for your help.
I re-calculated things with a good old pen and paper (and my trusty book) and got something much more like your figures.
So set to work on that last night.
Will let you loony how it turns out.

Re: Help for my first extract
Okay, I look forward to it.
(Assuming your phone turned "know" into "loony")

Re: Help for my first extract
Hey Stitch,
I promised you an update.
Bottled it yesterday, and the wee taste test I did was a success.
It tastes great already so can only get better as it conditions. Right?
Thanks loads for your help, it's definitely converted me to extract brewing.
Doing my second one today.
Thanks loads.

Re: Help for my first extract
Good news. It will only get better in the bottles, as long as they're nice and clean.
I hope it went well yesterday.
