Newbie question about weights and measures

Post by swanjack » Tue Oct 09, 2012 8:23 pm

Hi all, have moved on from the can kits and have just done my first single hop extract boil. Wow, what a completely different experience. I am hooked !! I have found a US recipe for my next brewday, but I'm confused as to what amounts to use, US weights and measures being different to UK ones. So do I just do a straight conversion of the US units and use the equivalent UK unit, or is there something else I need to do.
I've done a search and can't find an answer.
Many thanks for any help.

Yeah, just a straight conversion. You can even type the question into a google search window for a real-time conversion, for example: 4 lbs = kg or 1.5 oz = g
The answer pops up below the input field even without you clicking enter. As an American referring to UK and European recipes, I use it all the time.

Watch out that a US gallon is different to an Imperial (UK) gallon.

A US gallon is 3.79 litres
A UK gallon is 4.55 litres.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Exactly, and the Google conversion offers that too. I'm not a paid advertisement, I promise.

That's great thanks. The US recipes just give us smaller batches then, but I suppose I could just do some arithmetic and work it up to 5 UK gallons !!! Don't want to miss out on 6.66 UK pints lol !!!

Right. 5 Imperial gallons = 6 US gallons, so if you're reading an American recipe for 5 gallons, just multiply all weights and volumes by 1.2
