Re: how much gear for extract brewing
In addition to your kit brewing gear you just need a big pan to do a partial or full boil, and a heat source to heat the pan (e.g. Your kitchen stove). Anything else is quite optional.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Jocky is right about the essentials. I use a 19l pan on an electric hob and get good results from a 23l brew.
Other items which I find very useful are some digital scales for weighing out hops (around £6 from ebay) and a digital thermometer (£3 on ebay) for measuring when to pitch your yeast. You can always find an excuse to spend more as your interest develop.

Re: how much gear for extract brewing
i just use large regular kitchen pans (6 litre or so ones)
as long as you have at least 1 bigish pan, some 1g increment weighing scales and a thermometer as said above your ready to go!
i've cut my brew time down to about half an hour or so now, 1 pan for grain, 1 pan for hops with my boiling schedule commencing at half an hour, which gives me slighty in excess of half an hour to tryto get my DME dissolved.

There's a little bit on boilers here.
It's also a useful checklist on what gear you need for extract.
