Sparge Time
Sparge Time
Hi. I've brewed a couple of extract lager recipies from a Clonebrews book but have failed to find any refference to how long to sparge the grains for. I just stood about wondering if it was done untill I thouhgt sod it that will do.
I'm pretty new to grains so would appreciate all the help I can get. I put the grains in a knotted muslin on the second go.
Cheers Nick.

Re: Sparge Time
i do them in one or more muslin bags for 30 minutes and make sure to keep the temp below 70c to allegedly avoid extracting tannins.
i make sure the muslin bags are not too filled and there is room even when the grain is expanded, when finished i gently squeeze some moisture out but don't ring them out or anything as i heard that can also squeeze out tannins.
i don't really bother going over 30minutes because the grain seems to have pooped out by then although no doubt you could extract more by transferring the bags to a fresh pan of water.

Re: Sparge Time
As Simon says.
Ideally around 65-75 degrees for 30 minutes.
I use a reasonable size drawstring straining bag I bought from my home brew store as it's less fiddly than a muslin bag and has plenty of room for the grains to recirculate (http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/aca ... PU9lvKy0lQ). At the end I put the bag into a colander to drain off for a few minutes and throw the runnings back into the boil, although a gentle squeeze of the bag does no harm.

Thanks Fella's.
Recipies say steep for 30 then sparge. What is the difference between steeping and sparging?

Re: Sparge Time
Steeping is when you leave the grains immersed in the hot water for a period of time, sparging is when you rinse through the grains with fresh water to remove all the extract.cellone wrote:Thanks Fella's.

no palate, no patience.
Drinking - of course

Re: Sparge Time
Do I need to swish them about a bit then?
Is it worth transfering them to fresh bag/muslin?

I don't do BIAB, but I think you lift the bag then pour sparge water through, although some do a "no sparge"cellone wrote:Do I need to swish them about a bit then?

Re: Sparge Time
Sparging isn't something I'd ever do when steeping grains.
Swish 'em around a bit in the pot while steeping to get plenty of water circulating around the grains. After 30 minutes just give them a gentle squeeze and drain them off.

As much as you want.
I steep my grain in all of the water I'm using for brewing.
