Have you brewed before?
If not, then my tip is:
Sanitise, sanitise, sanitise.
About 50% of brewing - maybe more in fact - is about cleaning stuff. And then rinsing off the stuff that you've just use to clean and sanitise your equipment so you don't get any bad flavours (why acid based sanitisers like starsan are so loved on here).
Would be good to know what your recipe is, and what you plan to do technique wise, then I can give you any useful tips that I might come up with!

hi
ive done a few kits up too now with some good results just thought id move on the the next stage. im planning the white house honey porter as from there website, bung all the grains in a large pan steep for 30 mins (in a bags) with about 3-4 litres of water, then drain and rinse the grains with some more water. then bring to boil and add DME. add the hops at different boil times and then cook honey for 30 mins at 80 to rid any nasties and add to the pan on flame out.
so will it work
cheers steve

Yes, I'm sure it will, you'll just need to pay a bit more attention to what you're doing compared with kits.
Extract brewing is generally very easy, although my #1 tip to anyone is to just use dry extract, ignore liquid, and get your extract as fresh as possible. Last weekend I made a blond beer in 2.5 hours from putting the water on through to getting wort in the fermenter. This was partly because I was just using a combination of light and wheat dry extract, and then boiling for 60 minutes with various hops. If I was going to steep some grain too that would have added 30-45 minutes to the overall process. I try and avoid using grain that needs mashing.
Coming on to the specifics of your recipe, the difficult bit you have here is that Honey Porter recipe contains Munich malt, which actually needs to be mashed, not just 'steeped'. The reality is that mashing just means that (as per the instructions on the White House blog) you need to keep the pot of grain and water at as close to a set temperature as possible - in this case 68 degrees C (155F). Keep your thermometer in the pot, keep the lid on as much as possible, and give it a little bit of heat every now and then if the temperature starts to drop.
Others have brewed this recipe and blogged about it - I suggest you have a quick read of those to clue you up before you start.
