Liquid Malt Extract

Post by andyd30 » Sun Feb 10, 2013 9:17 pm

Hi All, I have been merrily brewing mainly Coopers kits for over two years now and have recently been given several tins of Muntons Light Malt Extract (1.5kg).

With it came some instructions, several yeast sachets, a pot of liquid hop concentrate and a pipette :)

I have been told that if I follow the usual process for brewing a kit, but instead of using a single can beer kit, use the Light Malt Extract tin + a pippete of liquid hop concentrate and then the usual 1kg of brewing sugar or DME and water, I will finish up with 40 pints of ale with an IBU of 30...

The liquid hop concentrate has steiner written on the side on a label in pen :)

Does this sound like it would make a drinkable pint? I have added LME to a kit before, but never tried to use it instead of the kit  ?

Any advise greatfully received [-o<

Cheers Ditch.

Mmm, you might be right. From what I can work out, a single or two can kit is already hopped, so it feels like the LME + liquid hops may well make an OK pint...

If the general concensus is I have posted in the wrong place, is it possible for a mod to move this post to the right forum?

Andy; I've just 'reported' ye post, mate. Mod's come and look at it now

Yeah. I did some Extract stuff, back in a past life. It's just like kit making ~ but different.

On here, guys can tell ye how to mess with a given Kit ~ what to add, to improve on the makers label. But, working with straight Extract? Subtly different.

The Extract guys'll sort ye out mate Image

Well, liquid malt extract is the same as what you get in a kit, but without the hops in it. So in theory, liquid malt extract + hop oil should create something like your beer.

But never having used hop oil, that's about all I can say.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

That makes two of us

However, the worst that can happen is its undrinkable, so time to get the FV cleaned up and see what develops
