Pouring cold water into boiler

Post by andyswallet » Mon Feb 25, 2013 7:04 pm

If I have finished my boil but have space in the boiler (ss stock pot) to add cold water, is there any reason why I couldn't/shouldn't?

I have a 15l stockpot and thought I could pour a few liters of cold water into it before siphoning into FV to speed up cooling.

While I think about it, what is the maximum temp that I can aerate wort ( i.e. splash it into me FV ) at without it being exposed to any real danger of spoilage?

cheers!

Depends where the water has come from. The point of boiling is partly to help sterilise anything in the water, so just adding water might introduce something undesirable. Having said that, I usually top up with cold bottled water at the end of my boil without any consequences.

Aeration temperature, to be honest I'm not sure. Personally I aerate at pitching temperature, but I'm sure that it's unlikely to cause a problem below 40 degrees.
