my first extract lager attempt

Hi i've made one lager kit and my second is fermenting so i think i'll try and extract brew next won't be anything too fancy here what i'm gonna chuck in...

1.1 tin light malt extract
2.500g light spray malt
3.500g brewing sugar
4.1x jar of honey
5.dry hopping 2x hops teabags of 12g each hallertauer hersbruck and challenger
6.2xpacks of saflager w-45/70

By my reckoning this should turn out ok but i could be wrong will the two hops go together ok and will it be enough?
Will be 23l

opinions and/or advice please

My first observation is that you don't mention any bittering hops?

What size vessel are you going to boil your brew in?

Ok I'm obviously missing something here,I was thinking i could just do this sort of like a kit,so i clearly don't know something would the two hops teabags not do?...Are bittering hops something else specific? I am a newbie remember all advice gratefully received,I should point out i don't have a kitchen but do have a camping stove,I'm assuming that i will need a lot of hops judging by your question,a few pointers or a link would be helpful........"Making beer from scatch with no gear would be ideal".......Dave

just read the link at the top of the home page about boiling hops for 60 mins to extract the bitterness,ok so if i was going to use say saaz boiling for 60 mins what sort of weight of hops would i need? I take it no bitterness would come from the teabags just flavour and aromas?
I work in a hotel so have access to kitchen and biggggg pans and lots of free brown bottles!!!!

Harbinger,

Your best bet is to boil the lot in a big pot, remove hop and break material, cool to 19c then pitch your yeast. Thats extract brewing :)

Also, read up on the lager yeast from the manufacturers website, I would only use it if you can control fermentation temp really well. If you can only control it approximately I would recommend Nottingham.

Failing that, you COULD make a small very hoppy beer by boiling 500g spray malt with the hops in 6 or 7 litres of water. then make it all up as you would a kit.

I think you will need more hops unless you are going for low bitterness and low hop flavour. More like 24g for 60 mins, 24g at 10 minutes but the combinations are endless.

Dont worry about what hops go together. The most important thing is a good ferment with healthy yeast. Thats what will make or break it, not the hop combinations. :=P
