Its just rehydratred safale04 x 2 packs, it might just be down to a high original gravity but as I couldnt be bothered to take one I`ve no idea.

Just had a peak inside the pot and Mr Whippy is on the move to the front of the pot now.

Whenever I use Safale04 things always go off like a rocket if nothing happens in the first 4 hours I normally know something has gone wrong. The conical with the blow off tube used to thump like hell, it was clearly audible in the next room even with the patio & fridge door shut.

Just kegged this into 50lt keg, carbonated it and tried a glass, perfectly respectable for a lager kit, with no "homebrew" taste attached to it. Considering the time it took to make & the price, I might well be trying a few more kits out.

Do you think The good yeast made a difference?

Its really difficult to tell as one of the last homebrew kit was over 20 years ago, (think I did do one 5 or 6 years ago as well) with normal cane sugar, airing cupboard for temp control and the standard packet yeast. So it could be a mixture of things, but I wouldnt have wanted to use the yeast in the kit, I would think that the kits have improved somewhat, the use of brewing sugar and the left over malt would have improved things together with yeast and temp control.

Its better than most supermarket / leading brand lagers tho.

Nice one, SO4 for lager, I will remember that. I thought my Ballantine clone, Nottingham yeast, would have turned out a nice lager if I had dropped the gravity.

I went into wilkinsons today... You'll never guess what I bought....

Oh dear. At £6.50 how could I resist.

Until the brewery's finished I have no beer so this offer came at perfect timing. :) :)

I think your be surprised, I had originally based my assumption when I started brewing again a couple of years ago that kits were still in the dark ages and hence went to all grain straight away. Its only due t the lack of equipment that I`ve done a kit for the time spent and money is well worth it.

Another confession I bought 9 kits today to fully try out the range on offer :), should be able to fit 4 or 5 buckets in the fermenting fridge ;)

I think I'll end up doing a mix of AG/BIAB and kits. I like to throw a party, so maintaining stock is difficult, and pimped kits are so quick and easy. A batch of something special AG once a month and a kit once a week, maybe?

Well if you've a bunch of lager boys at the party there is always the piss in a bucket technique :)
