TCP taste

Post by IPA Dude » Thu Jun 13, 2013 7:54 pm

Half way through brewing a lager extract recipes and checked the gravity and I always taste but there seems to be a medicinal, almost least TCP, taste to it.

Is that anything to worry about and will the taste mellow? Or is it a infection/disaster and should I get rid?

Thanks

I'm afraid it's likely to be an infection or chlorine/chloride. Had a fair few of these when I first started out, nothing you can do if that really is the taste you are getting.

hops plus chlorine = tcp
soz mate,

sometimes can just be v young and alot of hops and yeast in solution, if no better after its clear its for the bin im afraid

to fix need at least 1 campden tablet per 20l of brewing water to remove the chlorines (i recommend doing this every time u brew with hops)

As above, maybe an infection, however... don't dump it prematurely. Let it run it's course and see how it turns out.

Only one I ever dumped was a TCP taste. Not much hope I'm afraid.

It can come from chlorine in water, but it can also come from chlorine in sanitisers that haven't been rinsed off properly. If you're using VWP, bleach, or some other chlorine based sanitiser, residue could have been left behind that causes this.

A professional brewer friend of mine once had a minor TCP taste from what he believed was a stalled ferment caused by a cold snap and a lack of heating at the brewery, but then I think he was also using a chlorine based sanitiser at the time...

The chlorine taste will not go away and I am afraid that it wil have go down the toilet prematurely. If you are using VWP bin that at the same time and try this.

Over the years I have had this problem a few times but since changing to this product none. Just remember to rinse at least four times.
