Hello there . I am relatively new to extract brewing and wonder if someone out there can give me some advice on the amount of hops to use .
As an example : a recipe calls for 20 grm hop x with AA of 10% . I believe i am right in assuming that if i have hop x with AA of 5% then i would need to use 40 grm of hops for bittering purpose ?
My main confusion is regard to using hops for finishing . If a recipe calls for 20grm of a hop for finishing does it make any difference if the AA% is any different since i am not aiming for any significant bittering effect . Do you get the same flavouring/aroma if you use equal weights of a hop despite their having different AA% . or would i have to recalculate the weight ?
Hope I have made myself clear and that someone can help me out .
Great forum , by the way
How to use hops
Re: How to use hops
Hi there, to answer your questions:
1 - 40g of a 5% hop will provide the same bittering IBU as 20g of 10% hops.
2 - I assume that by finishing you mean either steeping at flameout or dry hopping? If so then the AA of these hops do not add any, or if it does the effects are to my mind negligible, IBU to the end product, this is only to provide flavour or aroma. If you boil the hops for anytime, you will impart bitterness which can be calculated using brewing software, check the sticky in the beer recipes forum.
My method of making beers is to have a 60 minute addition to provide half of the bitterness i require then load up on the reminder by adding hops at 10 and 5 minutes to go in the boil. I then dry hop as well.
If you have a mobile, there are some free brewing software apps, i use brewr on the android and also brew mate on my windows PC.
I hope i have helped out and i hope you have many happy brews.

Re: How to use hops
Thanks for that .
Didn't explain myself clearly . What i meant by finishing was adding to the last 15 minutes or less of a boil .

No worries, glad I could assist.
I have copied my hop schedule from my latest brew which shall show you the ibu at each step.
14.00 g Magnum (AA 14.4%, Whole) 60 min, 19.6 IBU
15.00 g Centennial (AA 13.5%, Whole) 10 min, 7.1 IBU
15.00 g Mosaic (AA 12.2%, Pellet) 10 min, 7.2 IBU
20.00 g Centennial (AA 13.5%, Whole) 5 min, 5.2 IBU
20.00 g Mosaic (AA 12.2%, Pellet) 5 min, 5.3 IBU
