I'm going to be trying my first extract brew next week after making kits.
I think I've got the recipe and technique correct in my head, I'm just wondering how to get the brew from the boiler to the FV safely.
I've got the fermenters with the black handles on the top, with about a 5" opening. I'm thinking after cooling I could syphon it in, but I will be boiling about 15l and then topping up with water, so I can't pour this water over the hops etc to get all of the flavour out.
The alternative is to pour it into my bottling bucket, topping up with water through my strainer, then syphon this into my fermenter, but of course that adds an extra step so more chance of something going wrong.
As you can tell I'm quite new to this, but am willing to learn and do things properly.
Thanks
Transfer to FV?
Re: Transfer to FV?
A couple questions first:
What material is your feremnter made of. I ask this because if it as wide mouth glass fermenter you run the risk of the glass cracking if you pour boiling water into it. You need to ensure that you bring the temperature of your wort down before doing so. This can be accomplished either through the use of a wort chiller, or by putting your brewing pot in an ice bath until the tempterature drops.
Second, I am not sure if you are trying to make a "hop Tea" or if you are boiling your hops in the wort (and then planning on running boiling water over it). To make a hop tea, boil your hops in a hop bag and let is steep; then add this infused mixture to your wort.
If possible, could you try to explain a little bit more about how you are approaching making this beer; that way with a little extra we can help advise you a little better. CheerZ

Re: Transfer to FV?
Thank you, I'm planning on following the Brewuk recipe for way to Amarillo.
I'm hoping to do the boil with the hops, up to 15l depending on the size of pot I can get. Then cool and transfer to FV. Then top up with water poured over the strained hops to extract the flavour.
The FV's I have are the plastic ones made by Youngs with the black screw on lid.
There seems to be so many ways of doing this I think I'm confusing myself by doing too much reading. I'm very much a person who learns by doing, so reading all of the instructions is not making sense, it won't be till i get on with it that it'll sink in.
