Well, good luck, Mr Providence. I'm not really experienced enough to be able to comment on your recipe, but it's not a million miles off the one I used.

Another comment: the H&B extract seems pretty pale to me (though my previous exploits have been with either kits or DME so I'm not used to the colours of LME). I'd appreciate someone's comments on what sort of LME the H&B stuff most resembles.

Well got the stuff today but I've got my FV full at the moment. So it will be a while before I start it. I couldn't resist the molasses that was alongside it so I'll bung that in as well. I'll report back when I've got something brewed.

Any updates on this?

I have brewed my own 1 gallon batch which has now been bottled.

I used Herkules and liberty hops (from that cheap bloke on eBay, really pleased) to try see just how cheap a beer I could produce, I have some more experiments lined up with the holland and barratt malt to work out what it is good for.

When tasting it before bottling it seemed to be lacking in body but had a medium-dark maltiness so I'm pretty certain its not from a pale malt I think someone may have speculated earlier or in another post somewhere on the same subject.

I'm curious to see how it turns out after some time carbonating and conditioning.

I think it will probably need to be combined with Dry malt extract to get more body in the future but at 1.54 for 454g it has already proved usefull for my yeast starters.

I'm very interested to hear from anyone who has used it before.

p.s - I once used 3 jars along with a brewers choice IPA kit and it was excellent.

My initial brew is a month old now and I've just tried a bottle or two and I think it's good. Check the thread above for the method and the recipe. Thanks to OldSpeckledBadger for his excellent method.

I will be scaling it up with slight modifications to 25 litres as my next brew, I can't wait to taste it.

I have added 3 jars to a John Bull Best Bitter kit and that has turned out fine too. I can't comment on how it compares to beer enhancer though. Around these parts the H & B LME costs £1.60 per jar and at that price there is no saving over beer enhancer. So I'll try the John Bull with beer enhancer next time to see if there is a difference. My LHBS has John Bull on offer at £9 so it won't be long!

H&B malt is way better than kit enhancer more flavour and boddy there is no glucose so is worth paying the extra few pence for three jars

I went to H&B today and they have got all products on buy one get one half price, I cleared the shelf of malt extract which was only five so I bought a jar of molasses to make up the difference not bad for £8.29. I am going to give this recepie a go but I will be using the malt extract in the boil with styrians goldings and then add some spraymalt at the end.

Hi,

Watching this post with interest as I have an experimental EDME Yorkshire Bitter + 2 jars of H&B malt extract plaus some steeped grains in FV atm...

The wort tasted good and my OG was 1040 (which happily is what I was looking for!) with just the kit, two jars & some steeped grains made to 22L

I'll keg this at the weekend and report back once its in condition (early Dec-most likely) ...
:)

Slainte!

Good thread - I've also wondered about using H&B malt extract for brewing, since the ME is the expensive bit. Has anyone ever written to them to ask them exactly what it would be classed as?

I'm just touching base on this thread to say that my standard everyday brew seems to be settling down to 2 gallon brews using 2 jars of H&B malt, 1 (500g) bag of light spraymalt and a bit of crystal. Once I've decided what my favourite hopping scheme is for this (25g Goldings was good -- I'm trying Progress at the moment), I'll probably make a bigger batch up.
