HPA Recipe - Comments or Sugggestions Please!

Hi folks, I'm putting together an extract recipe loosely based on this Wye Valley HPA from the Hop and Grain database:

25 litre batch OG 1040 ABV 4%

GOLDEN PROMISE PALE MALT 3804 gms
WHEAT MALT 424 gms

HOPS Boil time 90 minutes

TARGET 31 gms

Add 10 gms Goldings last 15 minutes

It's going to be my first foray into extracts as soon as I shift what kits I've got lying around and get hold of a boiler and chiller. Get comfy with these and I'll more than likely be moving onto AG.

The hops are straight forward, but I was planning on substituting the Golden Promise for 3kg Pale LME (Coopers or similar) and the Wheat Malt for 500g spray wheat malt.

I'm not too worried about the ABV wandering off a touch, but would the 500g of wm imbalance things too much? I'll probably be adjusting things down slightly for a 22 litre batch.

Also, do anyone make/sell a Golden Promise malt extract? (Not seen one anywhere)

Any comments/suggestions/adjustments would be very welcome ta! 8)

300g wheat spraymalt would be nearer to the recipe. I wouldn't worry about which variety of barley the malt extract was made from. The yeast strain you use will probably have more effect on the flavour.
Best wishes

Excellent, cheers Mr. B :)

I haven't read much into the world of yeasts yet, so I was going to go with the tried and tested Saf 04 'til I got the hang of the process side of things.

S-04 is a decent work-horse of a yeast. It'll give you a decent result. Quite a few people seem to prefer Nottingham for pale ales. There's lots of good information and advice on the yeast sub-forum when you decide to branch out.
Best wishes

Thanks again - I've got 3 or 4 kits to see off first, that should see me with plenty of time to read up on yeasts 8)

Did you or anyone else ever try this recipe? My instinct would be that it would need more late hops, and the brewery literature mentions Styrian Goldings which my palate agrees with. Just interested as its a great pint.

Sorry for the very late reply, only just seen your post!

I haven't got around to this yet, a recent house move put everything on the back burner (so to speak).

Finally got all my kit together and made my first extract brew last night (not this one) basically to try out the boiler, chiller & strainers etc. before I move down the AG route.

Seems to have gone reasonably well, bit short on final volume but the OG was spot on.

A couple more extracts are planned whilst I adjust the volume, so will probably give this a go soon. Thanks for the heads up on the hops, I may have to re-consider these.

I'll try and remember to post back if I ever make it :)
