First Extract Brew - Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby
First Extract Brew - Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby
Well taking the plunge next weekend, most ingredients got, just the Crytsal Malt on order as the shop had run out!
Anyway, following the extract brew method and recipe in Brew Your Own British Real Ale (3rd Edition)
I'll let you know if I create 19ltrs of waste or if something good comes out of it.
I will be using a Ritchies Boiler and S-04 yeast.
Any hints and tips most welcome...

Re: First Extract Brew - Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby
A few here have done the Sarah Hughes and are happy with the results.
I assume you'll be putting the crystal in a grain bag to steep it. That's what I do. I tie a knot in the end and then tie a length of string to it so that it's easier to fish out. A few times during the steep, maybe every 5 minutes, I agitate the bag up and down a few times which seems to help flush out that goodness which would otherwise be trapped in the bag.

I have a grain bag that came with the boiler, so I shall be using that now that you have said. Thanks for the advice, will apply.

Hi
I'm watching htis thread with interest...
I myself would like to brew this Mild but I was thinking of using a spare can of pale malt extract I have and making a 9 litre batch... I've done some calculations and it looks feasable
Certainly be interested to see how yours goes
Good luck!

It's a great beer. I've done the AG version.
I was surprised you posted the recipe straight out of the book on here though!

The recipe is on www.hopandgrain.com anyway. It worked out to be one of my best extract brews

Yes, someone else who steals the work of others. Why do these people think that changing a number or two slightly, like changing the odd ingredient by three or four grammes, absolves them of copyright issues?pdtnc wrote:The recipe is on http://www.hopandgrain.com anyway.

Its the lack of enforcement of the copyright laws that unfortunately makes people flaunt the issue .

It's the cost of enforcement that is the problem, so it really has to be worthwhile before going along that route, and it really is not a big enough issue to worry about. A book is to be used after all, and this is a hobby; people are expected, and should be encouraged, to talk about what they are doing. I do not object to the odd recipe being published in the interests of furtherance. Even less once the book has run its course.6470zzy wrote: Its the lack of enforcement of the copyright laws that unfortunately makes people flaunt the issue .

In the case of the web site mentioned, there are only a little over a handful of recipes that can be directly traced to the second edition of Brew Your Own. it is an ethical issue really, but it would not take a busting lot of effort for him to put the whole book up there. As soon as there is as much as a Google ad on the site, it becomes a commercial site, someone profiting from the work of others, and that is when it becomes really naughty.
Re: First Extract Brew - Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby
I have also removed the recipe from my original post...

He's a member on here anyway.

I've pmed the site owner (who is a member here) to make him aware of this. Since anyone can add recipes, it's quite possible he isn't aware of the copyright problems.
The same thing can happen on this forum, even though we do our best to remove items that could breach copyright, people post so many things that's it's almost impossible to keep track of it all.
