Simple wheat recipe

Post by Spud395 » Thu May 20, 2010 10:36 am

Thinking of chancing an extract brew and fancy a wheat beer.
I cant seem to find an extract recipe anywhere without orange skins and stuff, is this nesscessary.

How would a mix of light DME and wheat DME go with a few hops.
No idea what hops to go for, preferably just one type.
Any speciality grains required?

Belgian wheat beers often use coriander and orange peel but if you are happy with a German wheat beer recipe then you can brew a very simple recipe.

I seem to remember there's a simple wheat beer recipe in Chalie Papazian's The Great Joy of Homebrewing. He uses two 1.5kg tins of wheat extract for 19 litres. The wheat extract contains barley too and he tells you that there are several brands available. Coopers for example do a 1.5kg tin. He doesn't add anything else except hops and yeast. No grains or spices.

Safale also does wheat beer yeast. The only thing I cannot advise on is the hop rate but if you google wheat beer IBU's, it seems the IBU's range between 8-15. That's very low compared to most beer styles. Hallertauer would be a good hop

Hope that helps a bit

Cheers

Jason

Cheers man , thats just what I waas looking for.

Would that make for a very low O.G. though with 1.5kg's for 19 litres?

You need two cans.

22g of Hallertauer at 5% should be enough for 3kg (two tins) of wheat and barley malt. You don't need aroma hops for a wheat recipe

I've never brewed this style but my girlfriend loves wheat beers. Let us know how you get on

Hey spud, how did you get on with this? Considering a wheat beer for my first extract brew and I've heard you can get a good result with wheat.

When I really looked into the investments I need for extract Paddy, I bit the bullet and put together a cheap as chips (under 50 euro) AG set up, that has served me very well.
I skipped the extract phase completely, unfortunatly the wheat beer too.

Just modified a 33L FV I had with a few Argos kettle elements and a ball valve.
Few minutes work

A few more fittings in an old cool box

A couple of meters of 8mm copper

Jesus spud, you're fairly handy with the old copper tubing there alright. I can see how you got it done so cheap.

I'm teetering on the edge of doing some extract/BIAB so I'm currently looking at boilers/brewpots. The boiler might be the way forward as I'm not sure my hob would heat 6 gals of water. I'd be a bit worried about the heating elements in the plastic FV. Are these safe? Are these what most AG brewers in Ireland would be using? I saw one for sale on the homebrewcompany website but the price seems pretty saucy for what you get.

Lot of guys on here using plastic as well Paddy, you do need to pick the right one.
Polypropelene (sp?) is best I believe with a good wall thickness (2mm) I'll see can I find a link to the one I used. Seen me good for 12 AG brews so far, used as HLT and boiler
Far from handy with copper, the mash tun is just push together fittings, you can take it appart after for cleaning.
The immersion chiller is just wrapped around a paint tin :)

Where abouts you based paddy?

Can't believe you made that wort chiller from wrapping the tubing round a can! :D
This is the feller i was looking at:

http://www.thehomebrewcompany.ie/index. ... cts_id=576

Seems to be a Young's fermenter, with the element and hop strainer supplied.

Based in Dublin dude.

Seems pricey for what you're getting all right.

Have you checked out Beoir.org, an Irish site for craft beer and brewing.
There's a big gang of lads in the Dublin area, they meet up monthly for tasteing sessions among other beer related things.
