grains for extract brewing? help needed

Post by malc » Thu Jun 17, 2010 7:27 pm

hi
i've been reading through the forums and i can not find an answer to my question about extract brewing i'm hoping someone here can help.
does anyone know where i can find a list of grains i can use for extract brewing? i've been kit brewing for around 18 months now and looking at moving on to extract with a view of eventually going to ag. i would like to make sure i can use everything that i buy and not waste any of it by not being able to use it.

cheers
malc

If its any of these you CAN use it for Extract brewing:
Crystal Malt (Caramalt, Pale Crystal, Dark Crystal Extra Dark Crystal)
Roasted Barley
Chocolate Malt
Pale Chocolate Malt
Black Malt
Crystal Wheat Malt
Crystal Rye Malt
Roasted Rye Malt
Chocolate Wheat Malt

You can NOT use:
Torrefied Wheat
Pale malt
Wheat malt
Brown Malt
Amber Malt
Mild Ale Malt
Lager Malt

Hope that helps, there are also lots of other Crystal-Like Malts that you can Steep for Extract Brewing :)

It's also worth noting that if a recipe calls for wheat malt or torrified wheat, you can use wheat spraymalt instead.

I know you gave the answer to this on a previous post but to what ratio should we use wheat spraymalt to wheat malt or torrified wheat?

Cheers

Great, thanks for that OldSpeckledBadger. I hope this will open up some more opportunities in the future. I've often held back on a recipe when I've seen the magic ingredient 'wheat malt/torrefied wheat'.

It's where mine always end up. I can't see it doing any harm. It's all organic and if there are any hop seeds left over, I'm sure they've been neutralised by the boil.
