Carapils for a stout

Post by kaymak » Thu Jul 01, 2010 9:59 am

Alright Guys,

Im planning an oatmeal stout for this weekend but the flaked barley I have is out of date, can I sub this for carapils? Would it make a huge amount of difference?

They are completely different I'm afraid. Carapils is a crystal malt. It'll give you good head retention but the flaked barley is responsible for the creamyness IMO. How out of date is it?

Its out of date by about a year,

If I upped the pats to maybe 10% would this compensate for lack of creamyness from the flaked barley?

Maybe ill leave it all together and up the oats, im only doing a partial mash so stuck mash becuase of the oats shouldnt be a problem,

Im thinking

Pale malt 35%
DME 35%
Oats 10%
Roast Barley 5%
Choc Malt 5%
Crystal 5%`
Carapils 5%
