I've thought about this a few times but never got round to it. Randy Mosher advises 4-8 ounces for a 5 gallon brew. Also recommends adding the cold coffee extraction to the secondary as coffee becomes harsh when boiled.

I assume this means boiling coffee beans and adding when cooled. Does this mean ground or whole beans ? I assume instant coffee would be a waste of time !!

you might want to read the porter porter porter post as we just talked about this.

Floydmeddler seems to know more about it than most. Prehaps he could post an extract brew recipe up??

Floydmeddler is talking about 25-30g of coffee at the end of the boil (ground beans I presume). Randy is saying 113-227g for 5 gallon of beer, but he is radical, so I'd air on the side of caution and go with FMs tried and trusted 25-39g as a first go.
Randy says cold extraction is the best way to get a smooth coffee flavour to your beer. i.e grind coffee beans, add to cool preboiled water and leave in the fridge for 24 hours. Filter the coffee grind out and add the liquid to the secondary.

Am going to do a gallon of hop back stout with Chocolat malt, crystal malt and roast barley and pale malt. Will soak 5 g of beans ground and add that after and see what happens. Don't want 5 galls of something I don't like !

Hop back stout is a good beer. I tend to up the chocolate malt a bit more than the recipe calls for.

Finally got round to making this one. I made a gallon and added 7 gramms of Sainsburys own label ground coffee at the end. Its equal to 35 gramm for a 5 gal batch . I used the Hop back stout recipe. It turned out fine but I think more coffe should have been added or used a stronger flavoured brand instead of the basic brand. I will make it again.
