Kegged this today and it tastes so good straight from the FV that I'm really going to struggle keeping my hands off it. Lovely grapefruit and lime character in the hops and a very pleasing lingering bitterness at the finish, Citra is an awesome hop!
Only thing I'd change is I'd rack off into secondary next time as I ended up with more yeast in the keg than usual due the combination of the blanket of yeast that floats on the top and the looseness of the cake at the bottom

Re: Basic Citra Pale Ale
Thanks for the recipe. Sounds awesome.
How long was it in the primary for? I've got some US-05 on the go at the moment and wondering how long it'll take to ferment out. It started at 1.040 and that was a week Friday, so 10 days now.

Cheers Davey, I'm really happy with this one especially as it's such a simple recipe, even better than my last attempt at a single hopped pale ale using Amarillo which was nice.
This was in primary for 10 days but as I said before, I think it would benefit next time from a couple of days in secondary before kegging because of the yeast.

This sounds really good!
It's got the added bonus that it'd use a whole 100g packet of hops so leave no odds 'n' ends laying around in the freezer

yeah definitely a bonus Rich. After my Challenger & Amarillo Pale Ale I'm planning on using the 3Kg Pale or Extra Pale spray malt in combination with 200g carapils as a base for a series of single hopped pale ales as I'm keen to explore the flavours and aromas of each individual hop and in each case I'll more than likely use the whole pack of hops each time

Re: Basic Citra Pale Ale
well, after reading a lot of posts about this absolutely fabulous hops... I gave it a try and made a "sample" brew - just one type of grains and one type of hops to sorta... evaluate.
and you know what? it turned out to be probably my best creation ever.
here is what I had:
Amount Item Type % or IBU
5.00 kg Pilsner (2 Row) Ger (3.5 EBC) Grain 100.00 %
20.00 gm Citra [13.00 %] (120 min) (First Wort Hop) Hops 33.7 IBU
20.00 gm Citra [13.00 %] (15 min) Hops 13.9 IBU
20.00 gm Citra [13.00 %] (5 min) Hops 5.6 IBU
1 Pkgs Safale US-05 (Fermentis) Yeast-Ale
and yea, I boil pils malt for 120 minutes...
you can take a look at the pictures and get full mashing profile on my blog post, but I do warn you, its on latvian, tho google chrome does a good and funny translation, if youre interested in the text, beersmith sheet is included, so you can take a look at what I've got.
All I can say that these hops just melted not only my heart, but also all who surround me - my SWMBO drank 2 full pints while I was bottling it, straight from fermenter - yeast, no bubbles warm and all...
I highly recommend giving it a try, fantastic hops perfectly suited for sunny light fruity-grassy-melony-citrusy pale ales and IPA's... should make a fantastic addition to the american IPA styles with and... oh well, rite rite. here is full story:

Re: Basic Citra Pale Ale
Looks and sounds awesome Andris, great pictures. I've got a feeling that this will be the best brew I've done to date too.
I think I'd probably had about a pint of mine just after it was kegged as I couldn't keep my mits off it
this'll be lucky to see March out, better get another one on soon.
hahaha! thats how it should be, who needs conditioning anywayAndris wrote: my SWMBO drank 2 full pints while I was bottling it, straight from fermenter
