More beginner extract help

Post by grimjak » Sun Apr 24, 2011 9:53 pm

Hi All,

This is my first post here so I'd like to start with a big thank you, I've got a couple of brews under my belt now (one kit, one extract) and the help I've got from lurking on these forums has been invaluable. Anyway I'm preparing to get underway with my second extract brew and wanted to get a quick sanity check on the recipe:

Volume At Pitching: 17.00 l
Expected OG: 1.058 SG
Expected ABV: 5.8 %
Expected IBU (using Tinseth): 50.4

Fermentables
UK Caramalt 0.300 kg (10.7 %) In Mash/Steeped
Extract - Light Dried Malt Extract 2.500 kg (89.3 %) Start Of Boil

Hops
UK Golding (5.7 % alpha) 42 g Bagged Whole Hops used All Of Boil
UK Fuggle (4.2 % alpha) 42 g Bagged Whole Hops used All Of Boil
UK Golding (5.7 % alpha) 36 g Bagged Whole Hops used 15 Min From End
UK Fuggle (4.2 % alpha) 22 g Bagged Whole Hops used Dry-Hopped

What do you think? I'm aiming for a basic English IPA.

Cheers

Graham

That sounds really good, I would use a little less bittering hops myself, but that's to taste really. What yeast are you using?

Looks good. What yeast are you going to use?
I'm just here for the beer.

I'm planning to use us-05. Which brings me to another question really, is it worth making a starter or should I just chuck it in?

I've found it quite hard to work out how much hops to use later in the process, for dry hopping etc. It's easy enough to chuck values into a program and get an idea what sort of bitterness you'll get but aroma hops seems to be a bit less scientific. Got to give it a go and get a feel for it I guess.

Yeah, i'm not sure about how much to use for dry-hopping, but i've always used about 30-60 grams with no ill effects, :).
US-05 is good. As for a starter some people like using starters, but with dry yeasts I just pitch straight onto the wort, wheras I make starters whenever I use liquid yeasts, it's up to you really, will work either way.
