My 1st Extract

Post by JTK » Tue May 03, 2011 2:28 pm

Hi all, got time this past weekend to do my first Extract brew.

.250kg Carapils
.250kg Caramalt(British)
Steeped for 30 minutes @ 70c in 4L water
Added 4 more liters water and brought it to a boil with .5kg Extra light DME
30g Columbus (17.9%) 60 minute boil
20g Cascade (5.9%) 30 minutes
20g Cascade (5.9%) 5 minutes
30g Goldings (4.6%) 0 minutes
Than Added
.5kg extra light DME
1kg Light DME
.5kg dark DME
.2kg Honey
.1kg Malto Dextrin

Topped to 21L

OG 1.054

Pitched a starter Safbrew S-33 @ 19c

Started off with a bang, and was bubbling at about 6 hours after pitching, I havent had any start that quick. Had to clean the air lock twice before going to bed, then again in the morning. It has since mellowed with a nice steady bubble!

Going to throw it in the secondary this evening, been sitting at 1.018 for 2 days now. Think its going to be a short stay in the secondary as I want it bottled soon! :o

you do realise that 250kg of carapils and 250kg of caramalt = half a ton #-o :-k
