Using Saccharin in brewing

Post by strangely brown » Tue May 10, 2011 9:20 pm

Hi all

I am thinking of setting foot into the world of extract. I bought Dave Line's Like you buy book, which is an excellent read and very useful. However a lot of the brews use Saccharin tablets. I know lots people use them in tea everyday etc but I'm a not too sure about adding artificial stuff to my brews. Is there anything else natural that I could use instead, without compromising the taste?

Many Thanks

Zephiacus

If it were me i'd just leave it out, i doubt it would taste bad at all, but on top of that had a wee search here on Jims and there was a thread in exactly the same vain a couple of years back, viewtopic.php?f=3&t=21827 . Hope that helps!

*shudder* I know I HATE the taste of saccharin in drinks and yeh this home brewing lark, to me, is leaving out all the chemical crap

I've only had a flip through Dave Lines book at a friends but the use of sach seemed odd to me too. You could experiment with Lactose sugar, yeast won't ferment it and is used in milk stouts for sweetness.
