adding LME to boiler without burning
adding LME to boiler without burning
In the past I have had problems with liquid extract burning on my Burco element .I have solved the problem with this method just wondered what other fellow brewers do. I heated the boiler to 66 deg and added the grain and steeped for 30 minutes. I removed the bag and turned the heat up to about 80deg . I drained off some water from the boiler to a 1 gallon bucket and stirred the LME into this. When I was happy it had all dissolved I poured this back into the boiler and when boiling added the hops and proceeded as normal. PS has anyone used the 450 Gr jars of extract from Holland and Barret its on offer at the moment ?

I had this problem the only time I used DME. I used Graham Wheeler's method in BYOBRA which was to add it before the water got too hot, but can't remember whea the temperature was.
With regard to H&B extract, I'm pretty sure there has been some discussion here before. Try searching in this part of the forum or in recipes.

I know were I went wrong last time . I was in a hurry and forgot to stand the tins of extract in hot water to soften and it came straight out of the tins as a thick lump and sank straight to the bottom and landed on the element . Even though I left it for 30 mins and kept stiring some still stuck on the element and i knew about it as soon as I switched on again.Wont do that again !! Will make sure its melted outside the boiler first.
Re: adding LME to boiler without burning
Its now over a month since I made this brew . I tasted it at bottling and it had a distinct burnt taste to it. rather than throw away 40 pints I left it in the bottle to see how it fared. I tried one each week and it had a distinct improvement each time. Now my mates can't get enough of it as they say its best Newcastle brown ale they have had even though it started off as a bitter !! I intend to keep a couple for a few months and compare. At least it wont be wasted down the sink. don't they say "Time heals everthing ?"

I always had problems using LME, I switched to DME and found it a lot better, the beer tasted better as well.
Always remember to turn off the boiler while adding the extract, only turn it back on again when you are happy everything is really well mixed.
