simple all grain to extract weight conversion

Post by timbo41 » Thu Jul 05, 2012 2:29 pm

Hi folks having upgraded?? from kits to extract just to broaden my knowledge a bit I've come up with a bit of a stumper. Simply put, can anyone guide me in converting the multitude of Ag recipes to an equivalent extract recipe ?
For example if a recipe calls for Marris otter 4 kg
Torrified wheat 1 kg
can i just use 4kg pale malt extract, or must i scale the weight somehow, and are there speciality malts that will serve the same purpose as the wheat. I guess what I really need is a site that gives substitute speciality grains and malts for those items in AG that need mashing. I havent got either knowledge or equipment for "partial mashing", just big 15 litre stocpot that i use for steeping and the boil
Just like trying new ideas!

Very roughly it's about 3/4 the weight of the grain for LME or 2/3 for DME.
Software like Beersmith or Beer Engine would help with the conversion.

Agreed. Beer Smith: type in the AG recipe, press the convert to Extract function and Bob's your auntie!
