Amount of water for an extract brew

Post by perryni » Thu Jul 19, 2012 5:21 pm

This weekend I am planning on doing a 20/21 litre brew to fill 40 500ml bottles.

How much water do I need to put in the boiler (roughly) that will give me 20/21 litres after a 60min boil.

My recipe is

3.3kg light LME
340g Caramalt

30g cascade 60 mins
30g cascade 15 mins
30g cascade 5 mins
10g cascade post boil

Cheers
Nick

Very roughly and it depends on your setup, you might lose 10% liquid per hour, and 1 litre per 100g hops.

You want 21 litres at the end. You're boiling for 60 mins. And you have 100g hops, so you will lose 1 litre to them.

So you need (21 + 1) / 0.9 = 24.5L.

VERY APPROXIMATELY. It's probably better to do it by trial and error to work out how your setup works.
