brew sizes and FV's

Post by gaztop » Wed Aug 08, 2012 7:00 pm

Hi,

I have brewed a few of the brewuk.co.uk extract kits with good success. I now want to buy some hops and dried malt extract seperatly to carry on extract brewing using recipes out of Graham Wheelers book.

I have got a 50L SS pot for boiling which I have added a tap and hop filter too.
What is the biggest batch size of beer I can brew without it boiling over?

The brewuk ingredients all came pre-weighed so you couldn't go far wrong. If I calculate the right ingredients and brew a batch of, say, 40litres would I be able to transfer the wort to 2 25L fermenting bins or should I use a bigger single one?

Thanks for help...

It doesn't really matter - 2 fermenters would be fine.

40L in a 50L pot may be pushing it as you also need to remember to add the volume of your ingredients too. It should be ok but you may need to keep a close eye on it.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

+1 for two FVs. You can always tweek one slightly and experiment a bit with dry-hopping, comparing yeasts, stuff like that.
