Budget Keg conditioning

Post by Mattpc » Sat Oct 12, 2013 2:09 pm

I've just transferred my Citra from the fermenter to budget plastic keg with s30 top. After a couple of days when drawing a small sample I found it had starting pressurising nicely as the beer foamed when drawn. However, after another couple of days this stopped being the case. Blasted it with a bit of gas down the S30 valve and it became clear that the washer below the valve between valve and lid was compressed too far and leaking. Therefore I changed the lid over for another one equipped with an s30 and gave it a small blast with c02 just to test that it was sealing.

Was this the best way to go in view of the problem? The beer was only exposed to oxygen for 5 mins or something while i changed the lids over. Seemed better to do it early on. I didn't add more priming sugar. Should I have done? Was it wise to blast it with a little c02?

All views considered with interest.

I would of thought you will be fine, blasting it with the CO2 was the right thing to do, you might just depress the pin for a tiny vent to make sure then leave it to do its thing.
