sense check recipe...

Post by dshar » Mon Dec 23, 2013 9:53 pm

planning to brew my first extract+grain batch on boxing day and wanted to get some feedback on the recipe.
its based on a hobgoblin recipe i found here, but i couldnt get all the ingredients and had to improvise a bit.
put it through BrewMate and came up with the following:
any feedback? just want to make sure im not doing something completely wrong since its the first time i used the calculator.
also, all extract+grain recipes i came across had ~10% of grains. any reason why you cant have more grains?
cheers! :D

10 litre batch

150g Crystal malt (EBC 150) [9%] steeped for 30mins @60C

7g @60mins fuggles 5.5%AA
7g @60mins styrian goldings 4.2%AA
7g @30mins fuggles
7g @30mins styrian goldings
7g @0mins fuggles
7g @0mins styrian goldings

Efficiency with malt extract will be 100% as you're not mash extracting - the steeped grains add colour and flavour only IIRC. Hops / IBU seem a little low for what is quite a malty, dark brew so I'd add a few extra hops, something it wont suffer by

Good luck with the brew - dont take it too seriously and enjoy yourself ! :)

Thanks pinto, sounds like good advice, especially the not taking it too seriously bit! Had a niggling fear that i might have something wrong in the calculator and mess up all the proportions, but seems its

about the max 10% spec grains. Since theyre only for flavour and colour, i guess theres a natural max which works out around that level? Above which they become overpowereing?

I've used as much as 35% steeped grains with no ill effects.
If I was you, I'd change the 30 min hops to 10 mins. You might also want to wait for the wort to have cooled to 80 C before adding the 0 min additions. I haven't tried this though, only read about it.
If you want morehop flavour you could increase the late additions by 50% too.
Evolution didn't end with us growing thumbs.

Sound delicious. I might borrow that recipe. Use cara bohemian instead of chocolate and ekg instead of Styrian
