Parry Tea Urn

Has anyone had any experience with Parry Tea urns? In particular the CWB6 urn.

I recently won a 27 litre one, that was advertised incorrectly, on Ebay for £1.04! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251597975400? ... EBIDX%3AIT

Will the basic thermostat be sufficient and will I have to mod it to keep a rolling boil. Im new to BIAB having upgraded from Kits so I currently not to bothered about being scientifically precise with my temperatures.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bargain! I have a similar one made by Burco and it keeps a rolling boil going, but I read other reports of boilers that didn't. The only thing to do is give it a try, I'd use just a bit of water so you don't waste too much electricity...

I have also been a user of the old tea urns and the thermostatic accuracy is not perfect but it should work, mine was an old stainless steel Cygnet and would have still been in use today if it had not started to leak at the weld seams then again it was probably 25+years old.

Oops, I only answered half your questions. I would not count on the built in thermostat at all and use a thermometer. Try to be a a tiny bit scientifically precise, because the enzymes you need to convert starch to sugars break down at 70 degrees c!

If you've got a digital thermometer, it might have an alarm that you can use to tell you to switch it off. I would recommend stirring it occasionally, too.

hope this helps
