Stout Recipe

Post by leon103 » Tue May 19, 2015 10:03 pm

For my first go at Extract brewing I wanting to make a stout.

I have Greg's book but was wondering if anyone had any other recipes that they don't mind sharing.

Thanks

I've recently moved to extract myself and have been pinching recipes from Norther Brewer:

http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/brew ... tract-kits

You can find the recipe in the additional information section of each beer and then source the ingredients locally as they only ship to the US.

Thanks.

I have been told about them, I think I will use one of their recipe's first because of the good detail.

The Russian Imperial Stout in Greg Hughes' book is great - page 180 in my version. I used 5.3kg of Cedarex and the listed brewing grains plus Fermentis S33 back in November 2014. The recipe called for 16 week conditioning so it remained in my shed over the winter which resulted in a gorgeous, smooth beer. The recipe said that it should achieve 8.2%, but I appeared to only achieve 6.4%... still, it was excellent.

There's a good clone of Hop Back's Entire Stout. I used about 6% each of crystal malt, chocolate malt and roast barley. The rest was DME. Hops were challenger for bittering and EKG for flavour. DOn't put loads of EKG in, though. Perhaps 20g for 20 litres. Go for 30IBU and as strong as you want. I got 1.045, I think.
