APA today

Post by Rookie » Mon Oct 04, 2021 4:22 pm

I got a three gallon batch of APA going this morning by steeping two ozs of caraffa II to give a bit of color.

Probably should have used less; it looks closer to an amber ale going into the fermenter.

I think it's a smashing colour. Don't worry about it

This was at the beginning of the steep, it did get quite a bit darker.

Could you make it up as a tea and add gradually?

I could have, but I like to brew with as few steps as possible that still gives good results so I just added it as is.

My main objective was to test out nugget hops to see if I like them. I'm contemplating growing hips next year and some of the local homebrewers say they grow pretty good here.

I took a gravity reading today and it's definitely done: 1.045-1.008. I'm not sure how much I like the nugget hops, but I'll reserve final judgement until after I bottle and it carbs up a bit.

For flavour profiling hops, is there a way to steep and taste hops, before you brew?

There probably is, but I just go ahead and brew. I normally brew three gallons so it's not a lot if I don't really care for the hop.

Had my first one today. I kinda like the hops, but they'd probably work better in a darker stronger beer.

Thanks.
Time to start planning my next brew day: 3 weeks before this batch runs out.

Yeah I was on 6 weeks. 2+2+2 but have just moved over to overnight Mash & fermentation in same kettle and then straight to bottle after 7 days and then a gentle warm for carbonation for 7, then sit for 7.

House recipe, I have made 100's of bottle of and little if any difference.
