Faith hops and clarity

Post by noble ox » Wed Oct 19, 2011 2:18 pm

Hi All :D
I am ready for my 1st BIAB brew Fullers London pride ( always been a favourite)
I am brewing outside with gas and was wondering if rather than using hop bags, could I add hops when required, then when cooled remove the wort to FV via a sterilised jug and strainer. The idea being to omit holes tap and hop strainer and allow the hops free range.......
Will this method affect clarity?
Thanks

Hi and welcome to BIAB!

I don't have a tap and hop stopper on my 50l stockpot and have not had much problems with clarity. The mild and the bitters I have done have been very bright indeed. I just lift the stockpot full of cooled wort onto the worktop where I first place a non-slip rubber mat and then tip the whole lot through a big sieve that rests on top of the FV.

Most of the break material gets through to the FV but I find it settles out with the yeast before bottling/kegging. I think it is a good idea to let the hops roam free during the boil and is probably even more important for the late addition aroma hops.

Good luck with the first effort - London Pride is one of my favourites and I keep meaning to attempt a clone. Keep us updated with how it goes and enjoy it!

Cheers.

Good luck with the brew mate: hope it turns out well, and if it does, share the recipe!

My hops always go loose in the boil, when I've cooled I strain the whole lot through a piece of clean voile sanitised with peracetic acid which I bungee cord to the top of the fermenter. This strains out all the hops and a good amount of the break material, it's low-tech but it's worked for me so far.

Best of luck with your first brew and welcome to BIAB!
