Making the leap

Post by BurnleyBrewer » Thu Aug 11, 2011 9:29 pm

Well, ive finally ordered my equipment and im ready to make the leap from kits(been messing round with adding malts and sugars to them recently) to BIAB. Ive ordered a swan 26 litre tea urn off ebay a brupacks mash tun and a hop filter. Also ordered a yorkshire bitter starter pack. Just need to order some bags (any recomendations?)
Is there any advice anybody could give on the equipment ive got or any helpful tips for brewing this way? So far this forums has been really helpful and has given me the confidence to make the step up. Thanks

For bags, contact Eoinmag on this very portal. Or read this viewtopic.php?f=35&t=42250

One question; as BIAB is essentially a 1 vessel brewing system, why the mash tun ?
I buy from The Malt Miller

I think you may need to do mini/maxi biab with a 26ltr boiler, im not that sure as i have a 50ltr mango boiler but i see no need for the tun .

Hi Burnley,

If you have ordered a Mash tun, you wont need a bag. You wont be doing brew in a bag, you will be doing an ordinary All Grain brew. So if I was you, I wouldnt buy a bag at all.

We could give you some advice about how to do your brew if you list out your steps on here.

Just let us know,
Cheers,

Thanks for that potatoes. I'd managed to confuse myself what BIAB entailies. Im going to do a couple of BIAB brews then hopefully move onto AG. Currently doing some research on BIAB, then I think I'll write my planned method down and submit it, see what people think. Thanks again everyone for the advice.

Don't be confused as BIAB is AG. I am looking at going this route too and hopefully getting a new boiler from the wife for my 40th in November. Apart from this site there is BIABrewer.info which is an Australian site and at Beersmith.com look at the podcasts and listen to the interview with Patrick Hollingdale who discusses BIAB (Feb 24th) in detail with Brad Smith and how it came about. Good luck anyway. November cannot come round quick enough for me!

Hi Burnley,

Here is a video on You Tube which gives you a good overview of how to do a brew with your mash tun. Worth having a look for 5 mins.
