2nd sticky day

Post by noble ox » Wed Nov 16, 2011 7:22 pm

HI All :D
My 2nd BIAB attempt the 1st is now in a king keg all seems ok
I am brewing the "pendle witches "recipe from gw book adding 10% grains hops and sugar for the 25l brew
All has gone ok (much easier 2nd time) I cooled to 22 c took a hydrometer reading 1058 at 23l wort
It seems too high
:? Any ideas?
Thanks

What OG were you expecting?

One idea is to add more water? You are going to make a 25 litre brew and you have 23l of wort.

Another idea is not to worry. You will just have strong beer.

Hi Thanks for the reply
I was not expecting to get the forcasted gravity (lack of experience with the mash stage) I expect I will top up after the yeast has calmed down a bit or leave it for a xmas special

My very simple maths says that if you add 3 litres of water, your OG would be 1.051. My maths might be wrong but here is how I worked it out:

23 litres at 58. 58 * 23 = 1344. You then add 3 litres of water which contribute 0 gravity. This gives you 1344 / 26= 51.31 or 1.051. And 1.051 is a good OG. My maths might be wrong though, and someone else might have another idea.

I agree with your maths, so 10% extra grain bill is about right for any inefficiencies in brew ing skills when reading recipes
So far I am pleased with results with things going well. normally a disaster
Thanks again for the info
